Rozhodl se, že natočí dokument o vlcích. Založil neziskovou společnost WERC. Tato společnost měla pomoci vlkům a sehnání financí na film. Jako první musel sehnat povolení a místo kde by mohli být vlci chráněni před civilizací, natáčecí štáb a ošetřovatele.Místo Jim sehnal v Idahu ve Sawtoothských horách. Postavil plot. Než se mu , ale povedlo sehnat povolení měl s tím strašné problémy. Prvním vlkem byla Makuji. Pak se přidávali ostatní vlci. Během pár let se smečka rozrostla o několik nových členů. Byli tam zastoupeni jak mladí tak dospělí vlci. Vytvořila se tak smečka socializovaných, ale divokých vlků. Hlavní snahou bylo, aby vlci byli zvyklí na lidi, ale zůstali divocí. Povedlo se. Šest let filmování a nahrávání zvuků. Nejdříve to měla být jen krátká doba a jeden film. S názvem Vlci u dveří, ale když dotočili tento film, tak zjistili, že až teď teprve začínají poznávat vlky v jejich pravé podobě. Tak ještě natočí druhý film s názvem Vlk: návrat legendy. Hlavním cílem tohoto projektu bylo ukázat vlky i v jiné podobě než jako krvelačné bestie. V této knize jsou velice zajímavé poznatky z vlčího světa. Jak jsou zvědaví, hraví, soucitní a hlavně mají veliký smysl pro smečku. Jako vlk samotář je velice nešťastný. Když vlky nemá jasné své postavení ve smečce je velice zuřiví a agresivní. I když to vypadá, že omega- vlk je jen utiskován a není důležitou součástí smečky, tak je to přesně naopak. Bez něho by smečka nemohla fungovat, a plno jiných věcí.Ale vše jednou končí a i tak Sawtoothská smečka se musela přemístit na jiné místo. Aby je mohli přemístit, museli jim podat uspávací sérum. Všichni pomalu usnuli až na Kamotse (alfa-vlka). Ten jako alfa-vlk vydrží více. Když už konečně usnul tak málem zemřel. Naštěstí to skončilo dobře a přežil. Takovíto konec bych si přála taky, ale skončilo to jinak. Smečka se přemístila a dostala ji do péče HERC. Ta se o ně měla postarat až do jejich smrt. Tato organizace zastávala názoru, že si vlci se vším musí poradit sami a tak když byl jeden vlk zraněn, měli ho ošetřit jak to dělal Jim, ale oni ne a nechali ho zemřít. Odešli jejich dva pečovatelé( měli neustálé neshody s HERC o vedení smečky). Tím smečka ztratila dva poslední lidi, kterým věřila. Nastalo 5 týdnů, kdy se o smečku nestarali žádní pečovatelé a při nich zemřel Kamots. Vlk, který představoval skrytou sílu pro celou smečku. Poté už to šlo jak řetězová reakce. Matsi dříve vznešený, vyrovnaný, beta-vlk. Když zemřel Kamots z Matsiho se stal vyděděnec týrán mladšími vlky. Musel být izolován od své smečky. To je to pro vlka nejhorší co se může stát. Být bez své smečky. Čemuk dříve alfa-vlčice. Se také stala vyděděncem. Jednou v roce 2000 přelezla 3 metrový plot a utekla do přírody. Jednou byla spatřena, ale od té doby už ne. Nejspíš nepřežila zimu.
Jednou Jim řekl ,, Návštěva smečky už teď není žádnou radostí. Je to spíš ponurá povinnost, Cítíme se být vázáni k těm, co přežili, ke členům smečky, jimž se podařilo přežít nejhorší¨¨
Tato kniha, je úžasně napsaná a dodnes je mi do breku, když si vzpomenu, že organizace, která měla vlky chránit. Je poslala na smrt a ten zbytek zničila. I když žili a zemřeli na stáří. Jejich bolest v srdcích zůstala vždycky a už nic smečku nevrátí do dřívější rovnováhy a spokojenosti.
Dosud nebyl natočen ani napsán žádný dokument o divokých vlcích. O jejich chování a způsobu života, aby zaujal i lidi kteří se o vlky nezajímají.
